Flattening The Greenhouse Gas Curve: Virtual Talk with Professor David Waltham
June 15, 2020 @ 7:00 pm
We’re thrilled to welcome Professor David Waltham for the inaugural event of our FREE “Climate Conversations” series, with his talk “Flattening the Greenhouse Gas Curve”, followed by short Q&A.
The event will start at 7pm and will be hosted by Cllr Gavin Grant.
Flattening the Greenhouse Gas Curve
In Professor Waltham’s words… There are many parallels between our battle against Covid-19 and the battle against manmade climate change. Both are caused by something you can’t easily see, both had small impacts—on other people—early on that could be conveniently ignored and both require mobilization of the whole of society to buy us the time to develop permanent solutions. Most importantly of all, we will eventually win both battles; the only questions is how much damage will be done before we get there.
So what are the climate-equivalents to washing your hands, social distancing, contact tracing, vaccine development or finding a cure? What’s the climate-equivalent of “keeping R below 1” and what’s the current value of “climate-R”?
My aim in this talk is to give you a new way of understanding the climate problem and new hope that we will solve it.
David Waltham is Professor of Geophysics at Royal Holloway—part of the University of London—where he has taught and carried out research on ancient climate change and, ironically, oil exploration for over 30 years. His teaching and research now focus on how oil-industry expertise can be part of the solution to modern climate change. Professor Waltham has also been a very active member of the Citizen’s Climate Lobby for several years and has given over 20 public talks on their behalf.
